Location

Dublin

Dublin is one of the most visited cities in the EU and is a popular place to live.

Dublin (in Irish: Baile Átha Cliath) meaning "Town of the Hurdled Ford’ is both the largest city with a population of a million and a half and is the political and indeed cultural capital of Ireland. It is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin Region.

Founded as a Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it is ranked 10th in the Global Financial Centre’s Index, is an economic, administrative and cultural centre for the island of Ireland and has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city.

There is a vibrant nightlife in Dublin and it is reputedly one of the most youthful cities in Europe - with estimates of 50% of inhabitants being younger than 25. Furthermore in 2007, it was voted the friendliest city in Europe.

Dublin is, of course, on the coast so there are lovely places you can visit such as DunLaoire and Dalkey to the South or Howth to the north where you can see the seals in the water and visit the fish markets which operate daily. You can see the famous Martello Towers, one of which is mentioned at the beginning of Ulysses.

Dublin is a city with music everywhere, friendly people and a relaxed athmosphere. Dublin people love talking, so for a student of English it really is the perfect place.
