Cuernavaca was established by the Spanish "conquistador" Hernán Cortes, who built his palace here, where visitors today can see some of Diego Rivera's most important mural painting. Emperor Maximiliano and Empress Carlota also lived here during the French Intervention and, today, their private retreat is an ethno botanical garden specializing in traditional herbal medicine. Among the many famous people who have lived in Cuernavaca, we find intellectuals, artists and politicians, incuding the Shah of Iran, the Nobel Prize Winner Octavio Paz, María Félix, and muralists David A. At the present time, there are several communities of retired people who consider Cuernavaca their post-retirement home. "El Zócalo" is the name for the center of the city. Some of the most important local tourist spots are located here, such as the Cathedral, the Palacio de Cortés, Robert Brady's Museum and Borda´s Garden. Around the Zócalo, there are small open-air cafés, bars and restaurants, which are all excellent places to observe the daily Mexican life and culture. ![]() Student Reviews
